ENEOS Xplora Inc. is the primary exploration and production (E&P) subsidiary of ENEOS Holdings, Japan's largest integrated energy, natural resources, and materials corporation. ENEOS Xplora was formerly known as JX Nippon Oil & Gas Exploration Corporation (JX), operating under that name for over 40 years before rebranding to ENEOS Xplora in January 2025. JX/ENEOS Xplora engaged in oil and gas E&P operations globally — including major LNG projects in Malaysia (SK10), Indonesia (Tangguh), and Papua New Guinea (PNG LNG) — for more than four decades. Its strategic pivot into CCS reflects ENEOS Group's commitment to carbon neutrality by 2040.
ENEOS Xplora's CCS strategy follows a 'two-pronged' approach: maintaining its oil and gas foundation while building an environmental solutions business centered on CCS/CCUS. Its most significant operational CCS achievement is the Petra Nova project in Texas: a CCUS facility at the WA Parish coal-fired power station near Houston that captures CO₂ from post-combustion flue gas and injects it into oil fields for Enhanced Oil Recovery. The facility captures approximately 1.4 million tonnes of CO₂ per year. ENEOS Xplora acquired full ownership of Petra Nova in September 2022, and also acquired a stake in Japan Drilling Co. — which possesses the specialized well-drilling technology required for CO₂ injection well construction — in April 2023.
In domestic CCS, ENEOS Xplora co-established West Japan Carbon Dioxide Storage Survey Co., Ltd. in February 2023, a joint venture with ENEOS Corporation and J-POWER, to advance geological survey and CO₂ injection feasibility studies targeting the seabed off the coast of western Kyushu. The venture aims to begin CO₂ injection by 2030, targeting 1.7 million tonnes per year. ENEOS Group's overall CCS targets are 5 million tonnes per year by 2030, rising to 50+ million tonnes by 2050.
ENEOS Xplora is also investing in early-stage DAC and CCS technology companies. It has partnered with 8 Rivers Capital to co-develop the Calcite DAC technology for the US and Asia-Pacific markets, and ENEOS Holdings invested in the US DAC startup AirMyne in early 2026. ENEOS also became the first company in the Asia-Pacific region to operate a Climeworks DAC unit, deploying a pilot system in December 2023 as part of its technology evaluation program for future large-scale Japanese DAC deployment.
