About This Project

Executive Overview

The ESS/SMUD Iron-Flow Battery Demonstration comprises six ESS Energy Warehouse™ iron-flow battery systems totalling approximately 3 MWh, commissioned for the Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) in Sacramento, California, in 2023 — the first ESS commercial deployment for a U.S. utility. The systems provide up to 10–12 hours of flexible energy storage per unit, charged and discharged at grid interface. The deployment is the initial tranche of a larger framework agreement between ESS and SMUD for up to 200 MW / 2 GWh of iron-flow long-duration storage, tied to SMUD's 2030 Zero Carbon Plan — a target 15 years ahead of California's 2045 state goal. SMUD is the sixth-largest community-owned electric utility in the United States, with its power supply approximately 50% carbon-free.

How It Works & Differentiation

ESS's iron-flow battery stores energy electrochemically using a liquid iron-salt electrolyte circulated through electrochemical cells: iron ions are oxidised during charging and reduced during discharge, releasing electrons that drive the external circuit. The storage medium — iron, salt, and water — is earth-abundant, non-toxic, and non-flammable, with no lithium, vanadium, cobalt, or other critical minerals. The system allows independent sizing of power and energy, supports unlimited cycling without performance degradation, and has a projected operational life exceeding 25 years. The 10–12 hour discharge duration positions the product squarely in the long-duration storage segment beyond the 4-hour range where lithium-ion dominates. The full 200 MW / 2 GWh build-out under the SMUD framework agreement would be expected to reduce SMUD's annual CO₂ emissions by approximately 284,000 metric tonnes.

Commercialization & Traction

The SMUD deployment serves as ESS's primary U.S. commercial reference deployment. The next tranche of SMUD deliveries was expected by end of 2024. ESS and SMUD also announced plans to establish a Center of Excellence for energy storage manufacturing in Sacramento with local educational institutions. ESS is publicly listed (NYSE: GWH). The company has faced financial challenges since the initial SMUD commissioning, reflecting the broader difficulty of commercialising novel battery chemistries at manufacturing scale with constrained capital.

Scalability & Strategic Context

The ESS/SMUD deployment is an early-stage proof of commercial viability for iron-flow technology in the utility segment, predating Form Energy's first commercial deployments. The 200 MW / 2 GWh framework agreement, if fully executed, would represent one of the largest non-lithium-ion long-duration storage contracts in the United States. SMUD's 2030 zero-carbon target and replacement of natural gas peaker plants with long-duration storage is the commercial thesis the ESS iron-flow platform is designed to serve. The platform's competitive position relative to Form Energy's iron-air system — which targets similar cost and duration using a different chemistry — will be shaped by manufacturing cost trajectories and demonstrated round-trip efficiency at scale.
