Executive Overview
The Rodatherm Geothermal Test Bed is a 1.8 MW pilot geothermal facility under development in Beaver and Millard Counties, Utah, developed by Rodatherm Energy Corporation. The project is Rodatherm's first commercial-scale deployment of its patented closed-loop advanced geothermal system (AGS), which uses a proprietary organic working fluid — rather than water — to extract heat from hot sedimentary rock without any fluid exchange with the geothermal reservoir. The company raised a $38 million oversubscribed Series A round in September 2025 led by Evok Innovations, the largest first venture raise for a geothermal startup to date, with participation from TDK Ventures, Toyota Ventures, TechEnergy Ventures, and others. Utah Associated Municipal Power Systems (UAMPS) is the confirmed offtaker. The company plans to break ground in early 2026, complete an initial loop by late 2026, and expand toward 100 MW using project finance once the pilot validates performance.
How It Works & Differentiation
Rodatherm's AGS is a fully pressurised, cased closed-loop system analogous to a heat pump: a proprietary organic working fluid circulates through sealed wellbores at depth, absorbs heat from the surrounding hot sedimentary rock via conduction and natural convection, and returns to the surface where a direct-drive turbine converts the thermal energy to electricity — without the working fluid ever contacting the geothermal reservoir. The system claims 50% higher efficiency than water-based binary-cycle geothermal systems by using a fluid that can extract the required heat with 5× less volume compared to water, and drives a turbine directly rather than through a secondary heat exchange cycle. The design eliminates the need for water sourcing, grit filtration, induced seismicity management, and reservoir stimulation. It targets sedimentary basins rather than volcanic or fault-zone resources, substantially expanding the addressable geography.
Commercialization & Traction
The project received BLM approval following an Environmental Assessment in September 2023, resulting in a Finding of No Significant Impact. UAMPS has signed an offtake agreement for pilot output, providing revenue certainty for the demonstration phase. The $38M Series A — completed September 2025 — funds construction and deployment of the first module, with a 20-year underwritten asset life (the company projects 40+ years). Rodatherm targets an LCOE of $45–55/MWh at commercial scale, competitive with fossil fuel firm power. The company holds a land base in the Great Basin capable of sustaining more than 300 MW of baseload generation.
Scalability & Strategic Context
A successful pilot would provide the operational data to support project finance for a full 100 MW commercial development at the same site, with the Great Basin's extensive sedimentary basin geology providing a multi-GW resource base. The technology's independence from volcanic or fault-zone geology — and its closed-loop water-free design — addresses two of the primary constraints on conventional and EGS geothermal deployment. The pilot's 2026 COD is aggressive for a company that had not yet broken ground at the time of the Series A close; investor confidence reflects the maturity of the individual component technologies (all fully commercialised) rather than the system as a whole, which remains unvalidated at commercial scale.
